“BUT BY PRAYER AND FASTING”

MEMORY VERSE: And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Mark 9:29
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Chronicles 1-5
BIBLE READING: Mark 9:20-29
One caring father brought his sick child to the disciples of Jesus (Mark 9:14-29). The boy was possessed with a foul spirit. The disciples prayed and prayed nothing happened. They bound and loosed still nothing. In the midst of all these Jesus came around. “What is the problem”, He asked. The father of the boy explained to Him. Jesus rebuked the foul spirit in the boy and he was delivered. When Jesus and His disciples returned home, they asked Him “why could we not cast him out?” These disciples had casted out several demons in the past so they wondered why they could not cast out that particular demon. Mark 9:29 says, “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” There are several truths we can glean from this verse but we will look at two. Firstly, in the spiritual world, there are degrees in the satanic hierarchy. Some demons are more malignant than others and have greater power over the souls of man.
Secondly, any Christian who does not fast and pray regularly is limited. There are some enemies that one cannot conquer except by fasting and praying. There are some battles that one cannot win except by fasting and praying. A Christian who does not regularly pray and fast cannot enjoy total victory. There are some heights especially in spiritual things that one cannot reach except by fasting and praying. Some problems cannot be solved except by fasting and praying. Some impacts cannot be made in this generation except by fasting and praying. Whether you believe or not, some things will not leave your life except by fasting and praying. That foul spirit did not leave until a man who fasted and prayed regularly commanded it out. Let me say this, fasting and praying must be backed with a life of holiness. Certain things cannot come into your life except by fasting and praying. The enemy had shut away peace from the life of the father of that young boy. When the man who regularly fasted and prayed got to the scene, He casted out the foul spirit and peace came into his life. Dear single sister, what you need is not more tight clothes or revealing clothes. What you need is not more make –up. It is a life of fasting and praying. Tight clothes and revealing clothes only attract strange men. Dear unemployed brother, what you need in order to get a job is not a second degree. It is not even connection. It is fasting and praying. Where marriage counselling has failed, praying and fasting will not fail. Many of us want God to use us like Paul and Peter but we don’t want to fast and pray. Many of us covet supernatural encounters but we don’t want to pray. It will not happen without a life of praying and fasting.
NOTE: As a Christian, you must fast at least once a week if you are serious about your Christian walk.

INTERCESSORS REQUIRED

MEMORY VERSE: and I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land that I should not destroy it: but I found none, Ezekiel 22:30

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Num 17-18, Ps 55, Isa 7, Jas 1

Who are intercessors? Intercessors are individuals who stand in the gap to pray to God on behalf of friends, families, colleagues, churches, pastors, countries, leaders’ e.t.c. Intercessory prayers have been practiced by all of God’s saints throughout the scriptures. God loves people who are preeminent in their anxious desires for the good of others and fervent in prayer to that end. When you take an inventory of people who God used mightily, you will find out that they were all intercessors. Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Solomon, Peter, Paul to mention a few. One of the criteria God looks at when promoting a fellow spiritually is his attitude to intercession for brethren. One of the reasons why Moses was able to see God and live was because of his exploits in intercession for the children of Israel. At a point while interceding for the children of Israel, he told God ‘If you will not forgive the sins of the children of Israel, please blot me out your book, Exodus 32:32. ’ God did not blot his name out of His book because He knew that Moses was not trying to be rude but he was just passionate about the children of Israelite.

Intercessory prayers open the doors of restoration for intercessors. Job 42:10 says and the Lord turned the captivity of job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave job twice as much as he had before. The long awaited restoration and breakthrough of Job did not come until he enrolled as intercessors and began to pray for his friends. The reason why many are yet to get their restoration is because they are selfish or don't intercede. They only think of their needs alone and not the needs of others. Another reason why you need to intercede is because of the laws of returns. The law of returns is also known as the law of giving and receiving. It basically states that what you give, you receive. When you intercede for people, God blesses those you are interceding for and you get double blessings too. A wise believer will spend more time interceding than praying for himself.
Whether you believe it or not, one of the reasons why the world is where it is today – recession in almost all the countries, lack of jobs , wars and rumors of wars is because of the increase in the number of complainers and reduction in the numbers of intercessors . The body of Christ lacks power and fire because people instead of interceding are busy chasing after money and wealth. Crimes is rising by the day not really as a result of lack of job opportunities but because people have refused to stand in gap for their friends and family. Complaining and blaming the government rarely solves any problem, it is prayers that changes things. Ezekiel 22:30 says and I sought for a man among them that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land that I should not destroy it: but I found none. If we do not take responsibilities and begin to intercede for our families, friends and nations things will get worse. This is why we need to go back to intercessory prayers for families and our nations. God requires serious and dedicated children who would intercede for the nations, leaders, pastors, family and friends daily so that He can bring about change.

ACTION POINT: Set time out from time to time to intercede for our countries and people in power that the Lord will put His fear in their hearts.

PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT

MEMORY VERSE: But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. Jude 20.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Lev 6, Ps 10, Prov 24, 1 Thes 3

What does it mean to pray in the Spirit? You see many equate praying with the spirit to praying in the Spirit. To pray with the spirit simply means to pray in tongues, for example Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:15, ‘what is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also.’ Praying in the Spirit means to pray by means of the Holy Spirit or with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is praying according to the Spirit’s leading or praying for things the Spirit leads us to pray for. Romans 8:26 says we likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.

When we pray in the Spirit we are praying according to the will of God. The Holy Spirit searches the mind of God and brings prayer points for us to pray on. When the Holy Spirit leads you to pray for a particular brother or sister, or leads to pray about a particular matter please pray about it. Most of the mishaps that happen in the body of Christ could have been avoided if only people prayed when the Holy Spirit asked them to pray. When you pray in the Spirit you are destroying the plans of the enemy. Not too long ago I shared the story of a man of God who the Holy Spirit led to pray against the loss of huge amount of money. At the point when the Holy Spirit was leading him to pray, he was not involved in any business dealings so the prayer point made little or no sense to him but he prayed. Several weeks later some men introduced him to some business, the men wanted to dupe him of his life savings but the Holy Spirit destroyed the plan and exposed these men because he prayed when the Holy Spirit led him to.

Ephesians 6:13 says wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye maybe able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand. Do you know that when you pray in the Spirit, what you are doing is you are putting on one of the armour of God? Ephesians 6:18 says praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watch thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.
When you pray in the Spirit you get more results from your prayer life. I remembered a sister told me she was going for an interview and the Holy Spirit led me to pray with her. I asked her if she didn’t mind if a common church cleaner prayed with her and she said no problem. We said a very short prayer and she left for the interview. An hour later or so she called saying she got the job. What really amazed her was the interviewer did not really ask her any question aside when she was available to start. Instead of spending hours praying and binding the devil, losing and casting demons, the Holy Spirit led us to pray for favor and we did just that and the Lord took control.

PRAYER POINT: Father, as from now on help me to pray more in the Spirit.

WHAT TO DO AFTER PRAYING.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Ex 36, John 15, Prov 12, Eph 5

BIBLE STUDIES: Psalm141:1-4

Instead of complaining or grumbling to God, take that matter or challenge to God in prayer. Instead of worrying and asking ‘why me’, pray to God. Matthew 21:22 says and all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Many prayers are unanswered today as a result of the activities that takes place after prayer. Whether you believe it or not, what you do after praying can either cause the heaven’s to honor your request or ignore your request. Don’t expect a response from God if you walk straight into adultery or fornication after praying. Don’t expect God to rebuke devourers for your sake if after a praying you refuse to pay your tithes. Actually the most delicate time is moments after praying, that is when the enemy attacks most. This is why you have to guide your heart against evil thoughts or avoid quarrels after praying because the enemy uses that a lot to rob many of their blessing. Exercise patience and avoid getting angry after praying, I pray the enemy will not rob you of your breakthrough. There are certain things you have to do after praying; failure to them may result in heavens not granting your petition. Remember, the enemy waits after prayers to rob many of their blessings. What did David do after crying to God in our bible studies? Firstly, he surrendered his life to God. After praying to God, surrender the matter to God. Secondly, he began to watch the words of his mouth. Many after asking God for a job will start to confess that the economy is hard and there are no jobs. It is what God hears you say that He will do, Numbers 14:28. It is unwise to go to God for a life partner, and after praying you begin to confess that it is hard to get a good woman or man. Many even do worse by confessing that there are no good men or woman around. After praying, begin to confess what you want. Thirdly and the most important thing he did was he did not allow evil thoughts in his heart. Philippians 4:8 says whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Not only, that David separated himself from ungodly friends and kept himself pure. Psalm 1:1 says blessed in the man who goes not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. After David did all these, heaven granted his petition and his joy was full. By the time we get to Psalm 145, we see David singing a psalm of praise. He sang a psalms of praise for the rest of the book of Psalm.

PRAYER POINT: Father, please purge me of every thoughts that does not glorify you.
